Abstract

Objectives : The purposes of this study were to examine the relationship between selfconfidence in performing maternal role and their nursing needs of primiparas, and to supply the basic data for developing nursing intervention for primiparas in puerperium and their babies and to improve the nursing quality for postpartum women.

Method : A questionnaire composed of 89 questions concerned about nursing needs for puerperium and neonate and self-confidence in maternal role was administered to 200 primiparas who had delivered a healthy baby without any complication in six Ob & Gy hospitals in Gwangju from August 20 to September 20, 2001. Among them 170 questionnaires were filed out but 23 of them were incomplete and 147 questionnaires were analyzed.

Results : The average self-confidence score for performing maternal role in puerperium was 2.78 on a Likert scale 1-4. The highest score of 3.41 in self-confidence was marked for "I have a limitation in my endurance for my baby" and the lowest score of 2.02 was marked for "I know what my baby likes or dislikes". The average score for nursing needs in puerperium was 3.96 on a Likert scale 1-5. Mean score for nursing needs of mother themselves was 3.95 and that for nursing needs of baby was 3.97. The highest score of 4.35 in nursing needs for mother themselves was marked for "breast congestion and mastitis control" and the highest score of 4.48 in nursing needs for baby was marked for "baby¢¥s safety management and first aid". There was no significant correlation between self-confidence in maternal role and nursing needs (r=-0.09, p=0.27).

Conclusions : The results of this study showed that the level of the behavioral aspect of selfconfidence in maternal role was lower than the level of the emotional aspect and the nursing needs of primiparas was high. Therefore, continuous education and counselling during pregnancy and postpartum period are necessary and it is advisable to strengthen the behavioral development in the educational program.
